Challenging is an understatement, but you made it.

A huge THANK YOU to the young people and educators who — through your tenacity, creativity, and leadership — meaningfully impacted our communities even in the face of so many difficulties. Take a look at a sampling of highlights from our past school year and take a bow:

Despite being too young to vote, over 1,240 Mikva young people participated in the 2020 election through voting squads, national youth election forums, youth councils, and the Great Electoral Race.

Over 2,500 educators engaged in Mikva’s professional development workshops to get equipped to create democratic classrooms and support their students in taking informed action on the issues they care about.

Youth Census Ambassadors in Washington, DC mobilized residents in Wards with lower response rates to complete the 2020 Census. In total, the Ambassadors held 15,568 conversations with community members about the importance of the Census.

110 Chicago youth across five different Citywide Youth Councils made policy recommendations in 18 Decision Maker meetings, resulting in 19 policy wins in the areas of health, juvenile justice, education, youth-police relations, and public housing. They also hosted 3 youth-led events on these topics.

More than 75,000 students from 18 states got on their Soapbox in their classrooms, and spoke up about the issues that are impacting youth today including mental health, racial justice, and the environment.

Young people in Chicago’s Neighborhood Leadership Initiative hosted a Town Hall, six community chats, and a Youth Safety Action Forum to discuss the causes and consequences of violence in their communities and present their youth-led solutions.

Elections in Action Fellows in Washington DC hosted Our City, Our Voice: a youth-led event for young people to speak directly with elected officials about youth priorities in this year's city budget process.

Students in classrooms around the country worked on addressing critical issues affecting their lives, and shared their ideas and solutions with peers and adult leaders at the National Action Civics Showcase event.

As we approach a return to a healthier and more connected time, we look forward to even more opportunities for young people to grow their leadership and help shape our communities. This summer, Mikva youth will dive deep into advocating for local policy change and get hands-on experience working in the offices of elected officials.

Keep an eye out for powerful impacts from the work of our Citywide Youth Councils, Neighborhood Leadership Initiatives, and Summer Fellows!
