Youth leading today — Mikva alum Lauryn Redford, a Sophomore at George Washington University, has emerged as a leading voice among D.C. youth activists pushing for stricter gun control measures. Lauryn was 15 years old when her boyfriend Zaire Kelly, 16, was shot and killed on his way home from school. Wanting to take action, Lauryn, with the support of her teacher, Karen Lee, organized for the creation of a mural in D.C. that honors 5 young victims of gun violence, including Zaire. Lauryn, with Karen's continued mentorship, went on to co-found the student-led organization Pathways to Power, create Ted Talks, and through a Mikva Challenge DC internship program, interned and now holds a paid position, with DC Attorney General Karl Racine. | |
