Youth leading today

Mikva alum Lauryn Redford, a Sophomore at George Washington University, has emerged as a leading voice among D.C. youth activists pushing for stricter gun control measures.

Lauryn was 15 years old when her boyfriend Zaire Kelly, 16, was shot and killed on his way home from school. Wanting to take action, Lauryn, with the support of her teacher, Karen Lee, organized for the creation of a mural in D.C. that honors 5 young victims of gun violence, including Zaire.

Lauryn, with Karen's continued mentorship, went on to co-found the student-led organization Pathways to Power, create Ted Talks, and through a Mikva Challenge DC internship program, interned and now holds a paid position, with DC Attorney General Karl Racine.

This spring, Lauryn and Karen were invited to attend President Biden’s announcement of his new gun violence prevention policies at the White House.

When our youth leaders are empowered by adult allies they are not only equipped with the tools needed to bring about lasting change in their communities, they develop civic agency and a lifelong commitment to civic action. Mikva DC Executive Director Robyn Lingo sat down with Lauryn and Karen to hear more about their experience at the White House, and how their relationship has sustained their mutual activism over the years. The numbers are in

When we put out the nationwide call this January for our youth and adult leaders to join in our 100 day campaign Youth Reshaping Democracy we knew they would rise to the challenge. We’ve been inspired by the sheer number of young people who got on their Soapboxes, facilitated community dialogues, met with decision-makers, trained peers and adults, and raised issues on social media through the #YouthPriorities challenge.

Equally impressive has been the number of local and national elected officials, experts, influencers and policymakers – including congressmen and congresswomen, mayors and senators – who engaged with our youth leaders, listened to their concerns and visions for our country, and worked with them to create solutions.

Final tally

"The best part was that I felt my voice was heard." - Student in Cobb County, GA

"These young people are already so passionate, knowledgeable, and persuasive. I can't wait for what they do next." - Adult Ally, Madison, WI
